éminence organics

No Comments 17 August 2011

greener penny has been known to give good face. she receives endless compliments on her freckle-free, even skin tone. no wrinkly, sun worshiper here.

how does she do it? easy peasy! simple sunblock from her trusty beauty brand, éminence.

they boast handmade organic ingredients from hungary… you know it is legit when royalty travel for skincare regimens. their 5-step sun care starter set is the perfect travel size… 1/2 oz of cleansing/healing and hydration.

slather on their coconut milk cleanser (pre-shake and bake), then smooth on their delightfully delish tropical vanilla sun cream… the fragrance will surely lure in a cute cabana boy or two. *wink*

fleabags

No Comments 01 June 2011

greener penny was buying groceries when a young gent asked her, “why not take a plastic bag? we have enough of them.” she responded with, “well yes, however i am trying to save the world here, so kindly put my organic veggies into my fleabag stat.” imagine the look on his face?

fleabags is a collection of chic-yet-completely-eco handbags that were created out of necessity. designers shira entis and alex bell simply could not stand the sight of all the plastic bags they accumulated whilst shopping, and wanted a stylish but sustainable alternative.

their oversized, hand-sewn canvas totes are lined with organic cotton, and made from a number of vintage, dead-stock and one-of-a-kind prints. each bag is distinguished by a limited-edition number handwritten in water-based ink.

lucky penny’s “the original flea: saddle” bag will house her life from spring to summer… from the market to maggiano’s… and no outfit change required.

earth day

No Comments 03 May 2011

greener penny has friends atop greener pastures… one of them was just given the amazing honour of being the first-ever glamour.com’s  “young and posh” blogger.

trust. it is easy being green… just follow these simple tips and tricks for earth day and beyond! our girl talks sustainable shop with greta eagan, who has built a reputation as an active eco-fashion advocate and social media ambassador.

question: how do we convince people to start caring about the earth? is it just a completely different way of thinking? or do you get up in the morning and make a conscious effort to be green?

answer: to a certain extent, i do think you have to make a commitment and a conscious effort about the way you live and the impact it has on others and the planet. the good news is that once you have incorporated a few green tricks and tips into your life, you start to live “green naturally”. it flows and is contagious!

question: name one thing that anyone in any place in the world can do right now to make a significant change in the environment.

answer: do not wash and dry your clothing so much. in fact, do not dry your clothing at all… hang dry it. the “use phase” of clothing (washing and drying) contributes three quarters of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions. wear your clothing a couple more times before washing it, and line dry it. it will have a real impact.

question: where is your favourite city to search for eco-friendly finds?

answer: everywhere! i seem to have a “green radar” that guides me to great local and sustainable restaurants, non-toxic beauty boutiques and eco-fashion focused stores. i always keep my eye out for new eco-conscious designers, products and cafés! i think there is a real return to “local”. food, clothing, products and even services that are produced locally is a great way to support a lower carbon footprint, fair and ethical labour, and practices that are regulated at a higher quality standard.

question: greener penny is *always* trying out the latest in the green food revolution. next is a raw diet. any tips or recommendations?

answer: this is a great time of year to do it! you want to go raw when it is warm outside, and your body does not need all those roasted root vegetables to keep you warm during the winter. i would recommend soaked nuts in your smoothies (or raw unprocessed nut milk) for protein. also make sure to drink lots of water because switching to a raw diet will definitely help to push toxins out of your body. lastly, try to give up caffeine and alcohol when you do a raw diet… that way your body can really benefit from the cleansing the diet provides.

fancy footwork

greener penny is t menos 60 días ’til cabo.

while she may be day-dreaming about siestas and sombreros, she is completely dreading skimpy swimsuit season. from pullups and pushups to protein shakes, the mere mention of “the gym” gives her the heebee-geebees.

thanks to her *new* brooks kicks, called green silence (made from a non-toxic, natural additive that allows the midsole to decompose 50 times faster than a traditional running shoe), her 6-pack will be a light green footprint on the environment.

bienvenidos.

lovely lacquers

1 Comment 01 February 2011

lucky penny is ready for spring. eff snowmageddon. mexico is also quite lovely this time of year.

fret not, lovelies… greener penny is here! when she found out about sparitual’s line of vegan nail lacquers (free of harmful chemicals and synthetic dyes), she almost chipped a nail whipping out her credit card at beautymark in vancouver’s yaletown.

available for spring in a mini-set of four fresh colours (gorgeously green, hello sunshine yellow, pretty in pink, and orange you glad you didn’t say orange). she named those herself, but it was like the nail gods knew how she loves changing colours every week. her favourite part? a baby bottle of polish remover. brilliant.

want more? greener penny sat down with nail artist extraordinare, christina culver, to talk nail trends… warning: do not try this at home.

let’s talk tips. is it still hip to be square? “i am very much a rounded (almost pointy) nail girl. square is so done! round is much more elegant. for short to mid-length nails, a rounded-square or oval shape also totally works.”

what about colours, and all these crazy prints? “for spring, i am really into soft taupes, pinks and nearly nudes. i also see a lot of bold, floral prints. i can never get enough of animal prints, but infused with spring shades for fun! nautical comes back every summer, so mix it up with a few anchors and sail boats in a pink palette.”
