tim burton

No Comments 26 January 2011

lucky penny is a fan of everything whimsical and fantastic. sadly, not nearly often enough of this in her fair city… that is, until the tim burton exhibit.

just inside the tiff bell lightbox, she was taken into tim burton’s crazy, colourful world. filled with hundreds of hand-drawn illustrations, small-scaled models of sinister characters, and scenes from past films (batman, edward scissorhands, and alice in wonderland, to name a few), her childhood memories came rushing back.

flashback: saturday mornings may or may not have been indulged in bed with beetlejuice cartoons. she also remembers sneaking into daddy’s office, and playing artiste on his business files with doodles. oops!

other highlights from the exhibition include personal notes written to johnny *swoon-inducing* depp. “everything in this room is edible, even i’m edible… but that’s called cannibalism, and is not acceptable in most societies,” writes burton.

the exhibition runs until april 17th. go! stat.

tiff

lucky penny remembers her first toronto international film festival. she was in high school… l.a. confidential and 7 years in tibet were the gala presentations.

determined to go to the closing night party, a single wink at the bouncer found herself in the vip section with the likes of mister pitt… my, how times have changed!

flash forward…

lucky penny must admit she is a *little spoiled* with invites on the party circuit, but she always finds the time for a few screenings… from black swan and biutiful… to never let me go and everything must go.

see you lovelies… “out there in the dark”!

the remix project

No Comments 09 June 2010

lucky penny is always inspired by those who stand up, and make a difference through a combination of skill and will. she certainly attends her share of fundraisers, but oftentimes the rarest gesture of all is to help out a stranger on her street, in her neighbourhood, or even in her city.

most recently, lucky penny had the extraordinary opportunity to work with city life, a film initiative affiliated with the remix project. the 4-year old charity reaches out to gifted, but vulnerable youth from priority neighbourhoods in toronto. program participants are insanely talented musicians, graphic artists and fashion designers, who might only be short on opportunity.

the remix project, headed by executive director gavin sheppard, combines industry mentorship, courses in art, culture and business to give youth the tools to contribute and succeed in cultural and lifestyle industries. drake, mel fiona, boy wonder… all have helped or been helped by remix. tomorrow evening will undoubtedly be a killer party.

sex and the city 2

No Comments 28 May 2010

lucky penny has spent more time thinking about what to say about sex and the city 2, than she would care to admit.

after an exclusive pre-screening on wednesday, she went out for cocktails at sassafraz to discuss the film with a dear friend. the conversation ultimately was a mix of ambivalence and nostalgia for what it was once upon a time.

two weeks earlier, the lovelies found themselves without boys… and a sangria bender quickly followed. at 4am, on a couch with old episodes of satc… 6 seasons worth of dvds brought back all their favourite moments.

big and aidan fighting in the mud. charlotte and her love stamps. the first time carrie sees big after breakup number one. *punch in stomach* samantha in the fire house. miranda telling big to go to paris, and get our girl.

the movie has all the affectations of the original series… classic carrie-isms, fashion porn, sex (ms. jones meet trojan condoms), a gay wedding, and dreamboat aidan… but it all seemed without context or consequence.

most will find value in the girly spectacle, while others may view it to be as “limp as a clam-mouth kiss”. à chacun son goût.
