the ceili cottage

No Comments 17 March 2012

lucky penny is absolutely convinced she has green blood coursing through her veins.

she and cute boyfriend spent two weeks driving around the emerald isle… listening to wonderful live music, exploring quaint villages with names like dingle and inistioge, and trying not to run-over sheep.

for this very reason, you will find them celebrating st. patrick’s day at the ceili cottage… guinness in hand, natch.

founded by world champion oyster shucker, patrick mcmurry, the pub celebrates celtic culture. truly living up to its name, which means “social get together”, on any given evening there will be great music, raw oysters and the *best* sticky toffee pudding in the city!

sláinte, lovelies.

soba tuesday

No Comments 13 March 2012

lucky penny is in the business of sharing secrets, but… only with her nearest and dearest. ready for one more? soba canada.

one to always admire passion, craftsmanship and love (she did work at hermès in the not too distant past), owner/farmer/chef, ted, runs soba tuesday once a week out of ichikiri japanese restaurant.

his soba noodles are the first and only authentic japanese buckwheat noodle in the city, but… with a canadian twist. he cultivates the buckwheat himself in manitoba. (did you know it is canada’s buckwheat capital?) once harvested, he mills the buckwheat and produces his own fresh soba.

sayonara.

o is for orange

lucky penny is almost settled into her *new* home… boxes are nearly unpacked, and renos are finally over. now onto the fun stuff, like planning her birthday housewarming.

our mall rat was window shopping this afternoon, and her eagle eye saw the most adorable squeeze orange juice glasses at crate & barrel. she could not think of a better way to start every morning than with a daily dose of vitamin c.

hint, hint.

tea for three

No Comments 23 February 2012

lucky penny has always loved sunday tea. when she was little, she would don her finest dress to sip earl grey, and catch up with mumsy and her dear ol’ grandmother.

even with their busy bee schedules, three generations of lucky ladies still make time for it at the liberty bar at the royal york. here they sip kyoto rose tea, and indulge in honey chocolate madeleines.

keeping with tradition, this lady who lunches likes to dress for the occasion.

taffeta and ruffles have given way to a sleek silhouettes dress by tibi. the silk frock has a demure, edwardian neckline that gets granny’s approval, but lucky penny is a fan of its asymmetrical hem and graphic print.

black camel

No Comments 14 September 2011

lucky penny often suffers from indecisiveness. with so many great options in the city, she cannot be blamed for being a little scatterbrained.

counting her lucky stars, er, pennies, she is grateful that one of her *favourite* sandwich bars, black camel, makes life easier with their menu. choose 1 of their 5 basic sandwiches, then personalize it with a couple of house-made sauces and toppings.

an ever-popular pick for patrons is their slow roasted beef brisket, but the roasted pulled chicken gets our girl salivating. to lucky penny-ify her ‘wich, add: pesto mayo, arugula and caramelized onions!

now if only choosing other things in life were just as easy and delicious. le sigh.

***psst… to avoid the disappointment of their “sold out” sign, be sure to check their live twitter feed at @black_camel!
